Determination of the summary weapon efficiency effectiveness indicator

Abstract

In terms of equipping ground forces with modern small arms and modernizing existing weapons, a problem arises of finding ways to quantify their effectiveness. The authors propose a developed methodology for determining a generic indicator of the effectiveness of small arms based on partial performance indicators, at the expense of which weapons samples are evaluated both in terms of tactical and technical characteristics, properties of ammunition, and the efficiency of shooting and reliability. This makes it possible to determine the minimum and maximum currently achievable level of efficiency of a sample of small arms being developed or upgraded. As partial indicators of efficiency, the authors propose: the design characteristics of the weapon, the characteristics of the ammunition, the probability of hitting the target, the average time of execution of a fire task and the average consumption of ammunition to perform a fire task. For the purpose of determining individual partial indicators, it is proposed to conduct an expert survey, on the basis of which the ratings of the characteristics of each partial indicator are calculated and their weighting coefficients are calculated. In the future, when comparing the characteristics of several similar samples of small arms, it is necessary to carry out normalization of values of characteristics of the studied samples. The authors also provide methods for determining the likelihood of hitting targets that are unprotected and those that have high-end personal protective equipment. The order of determining the average time of execution of a fire task and the average consumption of ammunition is shown. An expert survey is also required to determine the overall performance measure to determine the partial performance rating and the calculation of their weighting factors. The authors present an algorithm for determining a generalized performance indicator and show the procedure for calculating it using different methods already known. The proposed methodology for determining a generic indicator of the efficiency of small arms allows to make a comprehensive comparison of existing samples of small arms using both their tactical and technical characteristics, characteristics of ammunition, as well as indicators of the effectiveness of shooting and reliability of weapons in use.
